This past weekend on October 4th, Labor United Educational League (LUEL) hosted a panel discussion in support of the campaign for Public Rail Now. The event was held at the American Labor Museum in Haledon, New Jersey. This historic site was the gathering place for the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike.

Aside from LUEL, other panel members included representatives from the museum itself, Public Rail Now (PRN), Sustainable Earth Council (SEC) and Movement for People’s Democracy (MPD). The event was also streamed live online, bringing the total number of participants both online and in person to about 20 people.

The event started off with a performance of a well-known gospel song “This Train,” then each panelist delivered a speech about the importance of nationalizing railroads from the perspective of their organization’s mission. Participants were able to ask questions and share their thoughts for the last segment.

Representing Public Rail Now was Adam Barrington, expressing how dire the conditions of railroads in the US are, from the implementation of the disastrous Precision Scheduled Railroading to the major decline in recruiting and retaining railroad workers. Adam also emphasized the necessity of rail workers taking the lead to properly handle freight and passenger lines and how crucial their role is in nationalizing the rail industry.

Other panelists showed solidarity with the cause and spoke on why their organization supports PRN. Movement for People’s Democracy is a coalition of various mass movements, including climate activists such as those from SEC or labor organizers such as members of LUEL. According to MPD representative Larry, “this is about more than just trains. This is about democracy,” where workers can have a safe, stable and well-paying job, and families can enjoy affordable, eco-friendly transportation.

Sustainable Earth Council speaker Shruti elaborated on how damaging the current rail system is to the environment due to train derailments which spill tons of toxic chemicals and general inefficiency of the freight lines. SEC advocates for a future where nationalizing the railroads will lead to safer working conditions and adequate staff to prevent derailments, as well as a reliable, efficient travel option for people all over the country.

Labor United Educational League showed their support to the rail workers, who receive no concessions from the rail companies in their contract and risk their health and safety on the job. LUEL speaker Tim mentioned it was the 80th anniversary of the World Federation of Train Unions (WFTU), an organization dedicated to uniting workers all over the world, including rail workers. “It is time we went on the offensive. It is up to us today to learn from the past and to build a fighting coalition which can draw support from everyone who sees the utility in a railroad system that serves the American people,” according to Tim.

In summary, the event was quite a success and helped further cement these organizations in the cause for Public Rail Now. As the movement gains momentum, hopefully in the future events such as this one become common and heavily attended, further gaining followers and supporters for a Campaign for Public Rail Now.

In early January, physicians represented by the Doctors Councils SEIU voted to strike on January 13th after working without a contract for four months. The union represents thousands of frontline workers in NYC. Nearly 1,000 planned to walk out from Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx, Queens Hospital Center, and South Brooklyn Health. Their demands were better pay and benefits to address the understaffing crisis.

In response, NYC H+H resumed contract negotiations, leading to the work stoppage being postponed. On January 13th, a joint hearing was held by the City Council Committees on Hospitals, Health and Civil Service and Labor. According to the union, since September 2024, over 2,500 physicians have been fighting for a better contract. If an agreement was not reached, the strike would have commenced on January 21st. It would have been the largest strike of healthcare workers in New York.

The union reached an agreement with H+H which includes significant base salary increases, a bonus for time served on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, rollbacks on cuts to sick leave hours, retention bonuses for designated specialties, benefit fund contributions to supplement members’ health benefits, reimbursement increases for continuing medical education and Juneteenth as a paid holiday.

The President of Doctors Councils SEIU stated that H+H has made short-sighted and rushed decisions without the input of frontline doctors, which leads to more doctors leaving and exacerbating short staffing and unsafe workloads. Over half of the doctors are working paycheck to paycheck.

In 2023, Elmhurst residents went on strike. They were the first resident physicians to strike in NYC in 33 years. Later that year, Morningside and West physicians voted to strike after 6 months of bargaining but reached a tentative agreement with Mount Sinai. It is commonplace for healthcare workers to suffer extreme stress and burnout from working long hours in understaffed facilities. On top of this, their wages do not keep up with the cost of living or cover student loan debt. This endangers the lives of patients who do not receive the quality of care they deserve. So long as these issues persist, future strike actions are not off the table.

The New York Times Tech Guild, which builds and maintains critical programs and creates popular online games such as Wordle, voted to strike just before Election Day. The Tech Guild is a bargaining unit of The News Guild of NY and includes software engineers, product managers, project managers, data analysts, and designers. It is the largest union of tech workers with collective bargaining rights in the country.

The vote concluded with 89% of the union’s members voting and 95% approving the strike. Roughly half the workers in the bargaining unit work on election-critical programs.

Job security is one of the major issues the union is striking for. The company has discriminatory practices regarding disciplining and terminating its workers. Over half the members who were fired since the union’s formation were from under-represented groups.

The Tech Guild Members are fighting for “just cause” protections, which require management to have a just and fair reason to discipline an employee. They are also fighting against pay inequity. A pay study conducted by the Tech Guild found that women earn 12% less than men and black and Latina women make 33% less than white men.

The Tech Guild filed several Unfair Labor Practice charges against the NY Times with the National Labor Relations Board for unlawful actions, such as failure to bargain in good faith and unilateral changes to working conditions. Readers of the New York Times rely on the workers of the Times Tech Guild for access to digital news, games, and election updates from journalists. Susan DeCarava, president of the News Guild of NY, stated, “It’s up to Times management to decide what happens next.”

HALEDON, NJ—Members of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of Labor United Educational League marched at the Labor Day Parade presented by the American Labor Museum in Haledon, NJ. This year marks the 3rd year that LUEL members participated in the march and the first year LUEL signed on as a Parade Sponsor. The American Labor Museum, aka the Botto House, is sacred ground for the labor movement, notably as the meeting place for over 20,000 silk mill workers during the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike. During the strike, the Mayor of nearby Paterson, NJ banned workers from assembly within city limits, at “Big Bill” Haywood’s urging Pietro and Maria Botto allowed the strike organizers to use their home to host weekly rallies of strikers.

The event started with a gathering at the American Labor Museum at 10:30 am, with speeches by the parade honorees. Speakers outlined the significance of the historical site and the demands of the silk mill workers during the Paterson Silk Strike. This included safer working conditions, ending child labor, and an 8-hour workday. Notable labor leaders “Big Bill” Haywood and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn delivered speeches from the house during the strike.

Various groups participated in the march, mostly local unions in fields such as healthcare, electrical, education, postal, transit, and construction. Political groups such as the Green Party of NJ and NJ Peace Action were also present. Residents of the neighborhood were enthusiastic to see the workers and activists who serve their community marching in the parade. The march was a great success, LUEL members were able to reach out to the community in Haledon and foster a stronger connection with the American Labor Museum. Members of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter look forward to attending their events, possibly holding meetings and a class at the museum, and collaborating in sponsoring the Campaign for Public Rail.
