Una vez más, los trabajadores pagan el precio de la rentabilidad con sus vidas.

Estos accidentes son el resultado de la inadecuada capacitación de los empleados en materia de Seguridad y problemas de Salud, la ausencia de controles y el desprecio por la protección básica de las reglas.

En los sitios de construcción, donde los riesgos son mayores, y a diario, la existencia y la adhesión a los procedimientos de seguridad no es un lujo. Es un requisito previo indispensable para la vida.

Los empleadores tienen enormes responsabilidades. No es suficiente para contratar personal, sino que también debe garantizar que cada trabajador esté debidamente capacitado, que no hay acceso a los equipos de protección personal, y que los profesionales de la cualificación y capacitación de los estándares de ejecución.

Estas normas – que enlace habilidades para la práctica segura – no son sólo instrumentos burocráticos. Son escudos para proteger las vidas de los trabajadores.

El estado no es inocente. Los mecanismos de Control en funcionamiento, las inspecciones no son satisfactorios, y la levedad de las sanciones no prevenir las violaciones de los reglamentos.

Al mismo tiempo, en los lugares de trabajo donde no hay cobertura sindical y de los trabajadores no están organizados en sindicatos, los accidentes son más frecuentes, como no hay nadie para defender, informar y exigir la aplicación de la legislación.

La presencia sindical en cada sitio de construcción es crucial. Es el único que puede empujar para la formación, para las condiciones de trabajo decente, para la aplicación de normas de calificación profesional, para las inspecciones. Es el que le puede dar una voz a los trabajadores antes de que el silencio de los muertos habla.

No podemos acostumbrarnos a la muerte en el trabajo. Las vidas de los trabajadores no son estadísticas. Son familias, son sueños, son personas.

Exigimos: formación Obligatoria en temas de Salud y Seguridad, la aplicación de las normas de calificación, el fortalecimiento de los controles, de la unión de presencia en cada lugar de trabajo.

De manera que los trabajadores regresen a casa con vida.

Los Constructores de la Unión PEO es que ya no expresan preocupación simple. Queremos expresar nuestra angustia por las dimensiones que el fenómeno de los accidentes de trabajo, especialmente los accidentes mortales, ahora está tomando en los sectores representados por el Sindicato.

Expresamos nuestras más sinceras condolencias a las familias y seres queridos de los fallecidos colegas y la esperanza de que van a ser las últimas víctimas de esta situación inaceptable.

What is noteworthy, is that this is the first ever Collective Agreement for the workers in this sector in Cyprus, and it is the result of their militant mobilizations and struggles in December 2022.

The 2-year collective agreement has laid the foundations for a comprehensive regulation of the working conditions of the employees in the sector. It covers around 3000 workers and provides for higher wages, regulation of working hours and other similar benefits, while it also regulates important issues pertaining to occupational health and safety.

What is worth noting is the positive stance of “Wolt” platform, which was the only one which participated in the negotiations, while the other platforms refused to do so.

SYXKA PEO supported the workers’ struggle from the very beginning. As the General Secretary of SYXKA PEO, Neofytos Ttiminis pointed out: “As SYXKA PEO we have been on the side of the workers from the get-go, and we consider the signing of the first Sectoral Collective Agreement as something very important, given that it covers one of the most vulnerable groups of workers”.

Trade unionists Mohammed Blaidi, Suzan Abdel-Salam and Yahya Arqawee spoke about the humanitarian drama and struggle of the Palestinians who are under constant bombardment and attacks by the Israeli army

In her address, PEO General Secretary Sotiroulla Charalambous stated that “PEO, as part of the international class movement under the umbrella of the WFTU, stands firmly and over time on the side of the Palestinian workers and the Palestinian people in general. This is what we have always done, this is what we have been doing since the first moment of the Palestinian genocidal operation in Gaza.”

She also denounced the fact that the US and the European Union cover up and encourage Israel’s forces to promote their own geopolitical interests in the region, while regarding the stance of the Cyprus government, she described it as provocative and problematic since it is increasingly tied to US and NATO policies. 

Present at the event were the Ambassador of Palestine to Cyprus Abdalla Attari, the General Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) Pambis Kyritsis, the President of the Cyprus Peace Council Tasos Costeas, the Head of AKEL’s International Relations Department Vera Polycarpou and members of the General Council, the Executive Council and the Executive Bureau of PEO.

The strike is following the refusal of the Organization, which is a semi-public organization, to agree on a collective agreement for the workers who have been hired since the day the Organization was founded. It is noted that despite the long period of time given since the announcement of the strike, there has been no substantial intervention by the Ministry of Health and the Government.

The State Health Services Organizations’ staff, of all professions, participate in the strike, gathering outside public hospitals.

The workers’ assemblies have decided to escalate the strike action in case the State Health Services Organization continues not to accept the conclusion of a collective agreement, similar to the existing agreements of the wider public sector.

WFTU’s affiliate, PEO, and other trade unions as well, declared in a statement that they stand in solidarity with the workers and will cooperate to vindicate their struggle.
