In Argentina today, there are countless conflicts stemming from many causes in both the state and private sectors. Addressed individually, they generate little visibility or political impact. However, it seems that, little by little, each of these elements that explain the social conflict is coming together, thereby strengthening its influence.

We retirees have begun to outright reject the policies of Javier Milei’s government from the moment he took office. No wonder. The level of inhumanity of these bootlicking stooges of the US and Israel in geopolitics and economic power, as their employees, knows no bounds.

Every day that passes, we learn of a new betrayal of the Argentine people, and particularly of the working people. Therefore, it is extremely important and auspicious to see how, week after week, our call to protest before Congress is growing, not only with more retirees but also with new sectors punished by the government and its “dialoguing” allies.

This Wednesday, June 4th, we will be surrounded by workers from the Garraham Hospital, families of people with disabilities, especially children, researchers from Conicet (National Council of Workers), migrants, representatives of indigenous peoples, those laid off by the state and private sectors, and, above all, the Ni Una Menos collective.

It has been mentioned a lot lately, starting with the series El Eternauta (The Eternalist), but it is a slogan that, for us, comes from the depths of history:

“No one is saved alone.”

For this reason, we call for a united, broad front of workers that will halt and destroy all the reactionary policies pursued by this government, with the miserable complicity of the so-called “dialogue-oriented” opposition, and, in turn, build the political tool defined and led by the working class that will build the new, just, and democratic society we dream of.

On January 13, Pambis Kyritsis, General Secretary of the WFTU, sent a letter to Argentina’s Secretary of Human Rights, Alberto Baños, demanding the immediate reinstatement of all dismissed workers and the unrestricted respect for the policies of Memory, Truth, and Justice.

See the letter below:

To the Secretary of Human Rights of the Nation, Dr. Alberto Baños

We have been informed that in recent times, during your administration, there has been a significant setback in the policies of Memory, Truth, and Justice. Similar concerns have been expressed by numerous national and international organizations, as well as by political and social forces and actors in Argentina.

It is well known that the site where the Secretariat you head is located, was one of the most emblematic clandestine centers of detention, torture, and extermination during the last civic-military dictatorship. Thanks to the work of the Secretariat of Human Rights, human rights organizations, and their dedicated workers, the most atrocious crimes to which a human being can be subjected have been documented there.

On behalf of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and its 105 million members from 133 countries, I wish to express our concern about this serious regression and urge you to reverse the dismissal of workers who possess the necessary knowledge to uphold these policies, without whom it is evident that they cannot be sustained.

Without further ado, I extend my respectful regards,

Pambis Kyritsis
General Secretary of the WFTU

The International Secretariat of the International Federation of Teachers Unions FISE, affiliated to the World Federation of Trade Unions WFTU, is in solidarity with the struggle carried out for weeks by education workers affiliated to the Association of Teachers and Professors AMP, in the provincial region of La Rioja, Argentina. This fight is for the defense of public education, and to achieve a satisfactory wage increase and in accordance with the needs of education workers by the provincial government of La Rioja.

The extraordinary provincial assembly, (face-to-face session/school delegates of the Association of Teachers and Professors of La Rioja AMP of 10/10/2024), ratified the continuity of the fight plan within the framework of the state of alert and the permanent assembly, and called the Governor of the province of La Rioja, to receive in audience the representatives of the AMP, the assembly of Monday, October 14 will take place to evaluate the audience with the Governor of the Province of La Rioja.

Likewise, the International Secretariat of the International Federation of Teachers’ Unions FISE supports the energetic measures taken by the AMP union against the guidelines of the initial teacher training programs, implemented in resolution No. 476/24, approved by the Federal Council of Education, based on the closure of teacher training centers, which endangers the stability of employment and access to educational training opportunities for young people and adults.

On the occasion of the visit of the WFTU’s delegation to Argentina, headed by the General Secretary, c. Pambis Kyritsis, and in the presence of c. Ernesto Quiqui Trigo, member of the WFTU Secretariat, meetings were held with the leaderships of the Federation’s affiliated trade unions, as well as with workers of the country.

During the meetings and the various visits and activities, it was made clear that Argentina consists another example of a reactionary setback for the democratic and trade union rights, due to the policies of the newly-elected neofascist government.

For the WFTU it is also clear that the international class-oriented trade union movement will keep standing in solidarity with the struggling workers of Argentina, and with the workers all around the world who struggle for dignity and against authoritarianist and ultra-neoliberal policies and measures.

As the General Secretary reaffirmed:

“The WFTU stands with the Argentine workers and the trade union movement of the country, denouncing the privatization of state entities, erosion of labor rights, and the overall neoliberal agenda and condemns the neo-fascist policies of the Milei government in Argentina…

… In the global geopolitical balances that are taking shape, we must promote, defend, and advance the class interests of workers for global economic and political relations based on solidarity and equality, respect for the right to choose the path of development, the reduction and elimination of the economic and social gap between rich and poor.”

The WFTU expresses its support for the upcoming strike and mobilisation called on 24 January by the Argentinean trade union confederations (CGT, CTA T and CTA A) and our affiliate unions, to express their opposition to the measures of the ultra-liberal and neo-fascist government of Javier Milei.

The Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU), the Protocol against mobilizations and social protests and the Omnibus law that directly attacks the rights of the workers, as well as the rights of the trade unions themselves, public enterprises and the resources of all Argentines, are added to the recent letters against multiple trade unions and social organisations for the mobilisations of 22 and 27 December, intimidating them into paying the cost of the operations of the federal security forces, and mark the current scene.

The WFTU calls on its affiliates on January 24 to mobilise with the Argentinean workers under the slogan “Solidarity with the Argentinean workers”.

The WFTU, which represents more than 105 million workers in 133 countries, joins its voice with the Argentinean workers in declaring a state of permanent alarm against these regressive actions and expresses solidarity with the workers in their struggle for justice.

The Secretariat.
