Statement from the World Federation of Trade Unions on the 12th Anniversary of the Rana Plaza Collapse in Bangladesh

The World Federation of Trade Unions expresses its solidarity with the working class of Bangladesh on the occasion of the 12th dark anniversary of the Rana Plaza bloody crime which had cost the lives of 1134 garment workers, including 851 women, on 24th April 2013.

The protection of workers in all aspects of their life is a main duty of the class-oriented trade union movement. We will relentlessly continue our struggle for the determination and implementation of health and safety measures in the workplaces, for free and safe vaccine for all, for public free and high-quality healthcare to all.

The World Federation of Trade Unions condemns the brutal actions of the government in Bangladesh, which have escalated in the last days against its own people. The recent gunshots against unarmed civilians, the arrests of thousands of protesters, the suppression, mark an unprecedented level of violence since the country’s independence.

The people of Bangladesh, particularly through the student movement, have courageously risen against discriminatory practices and now demand justice, democracy, and human rights. The situation in the country, as well as the massive demonstrations taking place, prove the urgent need for an end to discrimination, for the protection of the livelihoods, and for the restoration of the shattered economy of Bangladesh.

The WFTU stands in solidarity with the struggling people of Bangladesh. We join our voices with our Bangladeshi affiliates in their struggle, and call upon our affiliates and friends all around the world to condemn the barbaric suppression and the governmental violence that is being held in the country!

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 105 million workers in 133 countries, stands in solidarity and joins its voice with the struggling Garment Workers of Bangladesh, who are fighting for wage increases, against the repression of the government and the employers and owners.

Despite that Bangladesh is the primary clothing supplier of the world, the garment industry workers receive the lowest wages globally. The Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre (GWTUC), representing the interests of more than five million garment workers in the country, called upon all stakeholders involved in the industry to listen to the just demands of the ongoing wage increase movement.

The answer from the side of the government and the owners, was repression. Significantly, during peaceful workers’ demonstrations, hundreds had been arrested, and false cases and trials against trade union leaders have taken place. Furthermore, in the demonstrations of the last days, at least 5 protesters have been killed by the police, and many injured.

The WFTU stands by the side of the struggling Garment Workers of Bangladesh and the ongoing wage increase movement of the country, on their just demands. We call upon our affiliates and friends, the class-oriented trade unions of the world, to express in every possible way their solidarity with the Bangladeshi workers, and to condemn the unacceptable murderous repression they face.
