The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 105 million workers across 133 countries, strongly condemns the arbitrary and unlawful arrest of Remzi Çalışkan, Vice President of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) and President of Genel-İş Union, one of the largest unions within DİSK in terms of membership, along with Kemal Göksoy, President of the Mersin Branch of Genel-İş Union.

These arrests, made without any concrete or legal justification, represent a clear attack against the labor movement and an attempt to intimidate workers fighting for their rights. The WFTU views these detentions as a deliberate effort to undermine the struggle of the working class in Turkey.

As a class-oriented international organization, the WFTU reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), Genel-İş Union, and all their members. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Remzi Çalışkan and Kemal Göksoy.

This injustice is not an isolated act but it is part of a broader attack on workers’ rights and freedoms. Such actions, aimed at silencing workers and their representatives, will not be tolerated by the class-oriented trade union movement.

The World Federation of Trade Unions proudly stand in solidarity with the resisting workers in Bağımsız Maden İş Union, who have been on the move for 37 days, demanding justice for the unfair dismissals of workers, dignified working conditions, and their union rights. As a fellow affiliate of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), we reaffirm our commitment to the struggle of all workers who face exploitation and oppression.

Members of Bağımsız Maden İş Union began a long march from Soma to Ankara 7 days ago, a powerful display of their unwavering determination to fight for their rights. Today, the march took a significant turn as the WFTU reaffirm its solidarity, standing shoulder to shoulder with the courageous miners. This powerful show of solidarity strengthens the voice of workers across the world in their fight against exploitation.

During today’s march, workers proudly carried the flags of the WFTU, sending a clear message to the employers that workers’ rights are not to be denied, and that international solidarity will only grow stronger.

The struggle of the Fernas Workers and the members of Bağımsız Maden İş Union is a struggle for all workers. We, as the WFTU, will continue to support our members in their fight for justice, dignity, and workers’ rights. Together, we will prevail!

Long live international solidarity! Long live the workers’ struggle!
