ITALY: A Necessary and Very Successful strike: One Million Cross their Arms with USB

This is the summary of a day that saw around one million workers cross their arms (with peaks of 80% in transport) and tens of thousands of participants fill the many squares organised by USB.

While the complicit silence of CGIL CISL UIL resounded deafeningly, marches went through Rome, with about 1,000 participants and ending in front of the Confindustria headquarters to denounce the massacre of deaths at work and call for the introduction of the crime of murder at work; Milan, where there were some moments of tension, Naples, Palermo, as well as dozens of garrisons in other cities and the initiatives of the dockers in Genoa and Livorno.

In Torretta Antonacci (Foggia) in the land that was Di Vittorio’s, with years and years of struggles of the labourers against the over-exploitation conditions, the day of strike resulted in the occupation of the land.

A cry went up from all the squares: lower your weapons and raise your wages, 300 euro net increase in your pay packet!

With today’s strike, the opposition to the Meloni government has finally come out and the world of labour has regained its voice and protagonism, tuning in to that cycle of struggles that is already going through other countries in Europe.

The next step relaunched by all the speeches today is the national demonstration on 24 June to consolidate and strengthen the opposition to a government that makes inequality and social injustice the hallmark of its political action.
